Milford Public Schools is pleased to announce it has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation (BCME) from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The award marks the 6th year in a row that the city and the district have received the award.
Now in its 27th year, the BCME designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. Districts are evaluated on funding, graduation requirements, participation rates, instruction time, facilities, community support, and more. Milford’s responses were verified by district officials and reviewed by the arts education research firm WolfBrown.
Music instruction in Milford is available to all students in grades PK–12, with offerings in general music, music technology, voice/chorus, instrumental, and orchestra/strings. The award also recognizes strong community support, including events such as “Smooth Jazz for Scholars,” a two-night benefit concert organized by local jazz musician Jay Rowe that supports the district’s music programs and performances at the Milford Arts Council.
Studies show music education improves language development, reading skills, and overall academic engagement. Students involved in music are also more likely to graduate and pursue higher education.
Dr. Amy Perras, Instructional Supervisor for PK–12 Music, said, “Receiving this designation for the sixth consecutive year is a testament to the incredible passion of our educators and the dedication of our students. We strive to provide a diverse and inclusive curriculum, from strings and chorus to music technology, ensuring every child in Milford has the opportunity to find their unique voice and reap the lifelong cognitive and social benefits that music education provides.”
Superintendent Dr. Anna Cutaia added, “This achievement would not be possible without the leadership of Dr. Amy Perras and the dedication of our music educators who inspire our students every single day. Their expertise, combined with the unwavering support of the Milford community, ensures that the arts remain a vital part of our district's identity. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to excellence and for keeping the spirit of music alive in our schools.”
Milford Mayor Rich Smith said, “Receiving this national recognition for the sixth consecutive year is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the dedication of our music educators, students, administrators, and families. We are proud of their continued commitment to excellence and grateful for the vital role music plays in enriching the educational experience of our students. Music brings our community together, allowing Milford’s vibrant spirit of connection, joy, and culture to shine throughout the city.”
