k waiver process

Dear Milford Public Schools Community,

As we look toward the future of our incoming learners, we want to inform you of a significant upcoming change to Kindergarten eligibility.

In accordance with Public Act 26-1, the State of Connecticut is officially phasing out early admission waivers for children who turn 5 after the September 1 cutoff.

Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, all children must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2027, to enroll in Kindergarten.

In previous years, families with children turning 5 between September 2 and December 31 could request a waiver for their child to participate in an assessment to determine whether early entry into Kindergarten was developmentally appropriate. Effective July 1, 2027, the state has repealed this waiver process in its entirety.

For the 2027-2028 school year and beyond, districts will not offer or accept Kindergarten waiver requests from families, and the legislation states that no exceptions will be granted.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Steve Autieri, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning, at (203) 783-3422.

Sincerely,

Anna M. Cutaia, Ed. D.

Superintendent of Schools
