Milford Public Schools is pleased to announce it has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation (BCME) from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. This marks the 5th year in a row that the city and the district have received the award.
Now in its 26th year, the BCME designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. Districts are evaluated on funding, graduation requirements, participation rates, instruction time, facilities, community support, and more. Milford’s responses were verified by district officials and reviewed by the arts education research firm WolfBrown.
Music instruction in Milford is available to all students in grades PK–12, with offerings in general music, music technology, voice/chorus, instrumental, and orchestra/strings. The award also recognizes strong community support, including events such as “Porchfest,” performances at the Milford Arts Council, and “Smooth Jazz for Scholars,” a two-night benefit concert organized by local jazz musician Jay Rowe that supports the district’s music programs.
Studies show music education improves language development, reading skills, and overall academic engagement. Students involved in music are also more likely to graduate and pursue higher education.
Dr. Amy Perras, Instructional Supervisor for PK–12 Music, said, “We are thrilled to receive this honor once again. This award reflects the outstanding support of our community but also celebrates the incredible music educators who work in Milford Public Schools. Music education is an essential part of student development, and Milford provides outstanding music opportunities across all of our schools.”
Superintendent Dr. Anna Cutaia added, “This recognition is a true celebration of the outstanding work our students and staff continue to build on. Earning this designation for the fifth year in a row underscores the strength of our programs and the incredible partnership we share with the community in supporting music education.”
“I am deeply proud of Milford for receiving this national recognition for the 5th year, highlighting the music education in our schools,” Mayor Anthony Giannattasio said. “It is a testament to the dedication of our educators, the passion of our students, and the support of our community. Music is more than a subject, it is a vital part of shaping well-rounded, inspired young learners.”
