Chromebook Social Media Trend

Good Afternoon Milford Public Schools Community,

We are writing to alert you to a new and dangerous social media trend involving student Chromebooks. This trend encourages students to insert conductive materials, such as pencil graphite, aluminum foil, or paper clips, into USB and other ports on their Chromebooks. The objective of this activity is to create sparks and smoke.

This behavior poses significant risks, including damage to the devices and, more importantly, the potential for the Chromebook to catch fire, endangering student safety. The media is reporting that other school districts in CT are experiencing these issues.

Student safety is our foremost concern at Milford Public Schools. We urge you to speak with your children immediately about the serious dangers of participating in this or any other hazardous social media challenges. Actions that jeopardize the safety of our students or school property will result in serious disciplinary consequences, in line with district policy, and may also lead to financial responsibility for damaged devices.

We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing the importance of responsible online behavior and ensuring a safe learning environment for all.

Sincerely,

Louis Giancola
