more breaking news - early dis on friday

September 7, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff Members,

As we continue to respond to the extreme heat and humidity in the area, all Milford Public Schools will have an early dismissal on Friday, September 8, 2023. Reports for our area continue to call for high heat and humidity on Friday.  Heat index values are likely to surge into the 90-94 degree range during the late morning and early afternoon period.  More concerning is the expected rise in the dew point which, when in combination with extended high temperatures, can cause adverse health problems.

Early dismissal for Milford Public Schools will follow the schedule below:

Elementary School: 1:25 p.m. (including Ready to Learn)

Middle School: 12:45 p.m.

Jonathan Law/Joseph Foran HS: 11:58 a.m.

The Academy: 11:00 a.m.

There will be no afternoon preschool classes scheduled.  If you have a child in an after-school program located in one of our schools, the childcare program will be closed.

We will continue with modified after-school athletic programs. Athletes will engage in low exertion activities, wear light loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks, and drink extra water.  Our coaches will closely monitor our athletes to help ensure everyone’s health during after school activities.

We continue to urge students and staff to wear light, loose-fitting clothing and to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated for the time that they are in school.  All schools will allow for frequent water breaks and will activate cooling protocols in their buildings. Here are some recommendations from the Milford Health Department for handling extreme heat in our region.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

Anna Cutaia, Ed. D.

Superintendent
