Cell Phone Reminder

This is a reminder regarding student use of personal technology during the school day. At this time, cell phones are the devices we are seeing more frequently. Cell phones must be turned off and stored in a student’s locker.

As outlined in district policy (Use of Private Technology Devices), No use of private technology devices will be permitted during school hours. These devices must be turned off or on silent and left in backpacks, stored in a student’s locker or other place designated by building administration.

If an adult observes a student using or carrying a cell phone (either on their person or in a pencil case/pouch), the student will be asked to turn the phone over to the adult. The phone would then be brought to the Greeter (Mrs. Tilt) and the Greeter will log it into PowerSchool. Each infraction/offense of the district’s policy, Use of Private Technology Devices, will result discipline which includes, but is not limited to, the following;

 1st Offense: Remind the student of the policy and have the student turn the phone over to the adult. The adult will deliver the phone to the office and the student can pick up the phone from the Greeter as they are dismissed from school.

2nd Offense: The student hands the phone over to the adult. The adult will deliver the phone to the office. The student is to call home notifying a parent that his/her/their phone was taken for a second time and that a third offense will require a parent to pick the phone up from the school. The student can pick up the phone as they are dismissed from school.

3rd Offense: The student hands the phone over to the adult. The adult will deliver the phone to the office. The student is to call home notifying a parent that his/her/their phone was taken for a third time. The student informs the parent that he/she/they will not get the cell phone until a parent/guardian picks up the phone from school.

Tardy to School

We know sometimes things happen that cause us to be late, which is why we wanted to let families know Harborside’s practice on frequent tardiness.

Unexcused tardies (not being late due to an appointment accompanied with a doctor’s office note) are counted at the district level and reported.

Students are considered tardy to school if they are not in their assigned classrooms by the school’s start time, which is 8:00 AM.  Please note that our bells are synchronized to cell phone and computer clocks.

Any student arriving late to school must report to the Lobby Greeter to check-in. All tardy arrivals are considered unexcused unless a doctor’s note is provided.

Tardies resulting from professional appointments (medical, legal, etc.) must be documented by an original note from that professional and submitted at the time the student signs in with the Greeter in the Lobby.  These notes must be on the professional’s original letterhead.

Excessive tardiness will result in an after school detention. The time of detention will be 3:00-4:00 pm.  The student will need to be picked up at 4:00PM.

Students with chronic tardiness will receive additional interventions/consequences.

Student attendance and punctuality is monitored by the district and through our building attendance review committee.
