Greetings all and welcome to the 2017 - 2018 school year! When I received my class list I was very excited to see so many familiar names and faces in PowerSchool. It's going to be an exciting year with a lot of new technology available and a refined Reading and new Writing curriculum. Also, every homeroom teacher will now teach Math to their own class and Writing will be the "3rd switching subject". I will be the Science teacher again this year.
I can't wait to get rolling...
Our initial Reading and Writing Units are essentially launching units. In Reading we will delve into strategies to effectively read fiction and nonfiction. In Writing we go through the full writing process and focus on generating ideas and details.
We start the year with a mini-unit on "Being a Scientist" and then dive right. CT has adopted the new National Science Standards and the approach is very different. The emphasis is now on the process versus content. The processes and procedures Scientists follow will lead us into the content. I've included a link to one of the units "
Math begins with multiplication and a focus on arrays (4x4 grid = 16, etc.) It helps reinforce their understanding of what multiplication is (repeated addition) and becomes essential in later units when we get into division, area, perimeter and especially fractions. If the arrays and homework seem to be repetitive, it's intentional. Abstract concepts such as fractions of a set are grasped much more easily because of all the array work we complete early in the year. "Trust the program" as it was explained to me.
It's going to be our 3nd year of change but it should be exciting and positive. I'm looking forward to working with all of you and your children.
