Happy Friday, Milford Public Schools Families!!

Whew!  Another week of the “triple H’s” – Hot, Hazy, and Humid!  Based on the reprieve we seem to have received today, we are hoping the worst is behind us.  Thanks for your patience and support during these past few days – and here’s to better days ahead.

As always, here is the link to the UPCOMING EVENTS electronic bulletin board.  Check out the many events coming up.

And now, let’s get to the News.

Monday, Sept. 10th:  Schools Closed in recognition of Rosh Hashanah.

Tues. Sept. 11th – Friday, Sept. 14th:  Regular Schedule (we hope!)

466 ‘Followers’ on MPS Emergency Alert Twitter Account So Far …

Wow!  We are pleased to report we have amassed a total of 466 ‘followers’ on the new MPS Emergency Alert Twitter Account (as of this writing) since activating the site only 1 week ago.  Great news!  It’s easy to sign up – just click HERE to create your account – and then make sure you follow us:  @mpsctalerts.

Just this week we used our new Twitter feed TWICE to send out the news of our early dismissals this week.  Sign up today! [But rest assured, the info will continue to be posted on our traditional outlets – including SchoolMessenger, the district website, and on the ‘scroll’ you see on all local TV stations!].

New! Middle School Open House Date Rescheduled to Monday, 9/17
Okay … the weather didn’t cooperate with us this past week, so all three Middle School Open Houses had to be rescheduled.  Here’s the latest news on that:

Monday, Sept. 17th – All three Middle Schools will conduct their Open Houses on Monday, Sept. 17th.  Save the Date – and mark it on your fridge calendars so you don’t miss out.

Sept. 11th Remembrances and Learning to Take Place Next Week

There are few adults in our community who will ever forget where they were or what they did on that fateful day:  Sept. 11th, 2001.  It’s important to remember, however, that nearly 100% of our current students were not even born yet!  All the more reason to be sure students learn about this world-changing event.  Course content (middle/high schools) is specifically designed to present the issues and historical events leading up to that day, things that happened on the actual day, and an examination as to what has developed in the years afterward.  Ask your middle/high school student about the activities conducted at school on Tuesday. It might be the beginning of a vibrant dialogue.

One City One Story 2018:  PIRATES!

We are pleased to announce the ONE CITY, ONE STORY 2018 theme for this Fall is PIRATES!  The adult book selection is none-other-than TREASURE ISLAND, by Robert Louis Stevenson.  As we’ve done in the past, two additional titles are chosen to involve younger readers.  This year, the Elementary selection is Shiver Me Timbers: Pirate Poems and Drawings by Douglas Florian; and the Middle School selection is Pirate Island, by Katie L. Carroll.  Several programs and events have been planned for the next few weeks and we suggest you visit the Milford Public Library website for details.  We will also profile these events as we get closer.

Tuesday, Sept. 11th:  Board of Ed Business Meeting, Parsons, 7:00 p.m.  And, we’re back to our (almost) regular schedule!  In case you are not familiar with the schedule, the Board of Education conducts two regular meetings each month:  The BOE Regular Business Meeting (usually held on the 2nd Monday of the month) and the BOE Committee of the Whole Meeting (usually held on the 4th Monday of the month).  The Business meeting covers current topics and those that might need immediate action requiring a board vote (approval of policies, acceptance of building projects, etc.).  The Committee of the Whole meeting will usually be based on a topic of interest, with a lengthier presentation, delivered by a guest speaker, to illuminate the issue at hand.  Members of the public are welcome to attend both types of meetings.  Here’s what’s on tap for Tuesday’s meeting:  Board Chair’s Report, Superintendent’s Report; Instructional Highlight: 1Day4Day1; Back to School Report; Proposed 2019-20 Budget Priorities and Assumptions; Human Resources Report; and the Disbursement Report.  Here’s the link to the PACKET.  Hope to see you there!

Thursday, Sept. 13th: High School Open Houses

If you are the parent/guardian of a student at Joseph A. Foran, Jonathan Law, or The Academy, we look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening, Sept. 13th.  Watch for details from your child’s school, specific to your school’s programming.  Hope to see you there!

Enjoy the weekend, friends, and to those celebrating Rosh Hashanah, we wish you a Happy New Year.
