Upcoming News & Events, 6/15 and Beyond
What a week! Graduations, Spirit Days, and much, much more. And now – it’s time to relax and enjoy the summer. Before we leave you, however, we want to thank you for your devoted readership over the past year. We’ve tried to supply you with ‘all the news you need, in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee’ – and we hope you have found it helpful.
One of the things we’ll be working on over the summer is a Communications Strategic Plan. It will likely include a survey that will ask about how you most frequently get information. Newspapers? Emails? Tweets? Facebook? In the line at the grocery store? Of course, we’ll keep you posted when the survey is deployed – but wanted to give you a heads up now. We thank you, in advance, for any information you are able to share with us. Bottom line – it will help us in our work to further strengthen the communication process with you.
Now, onto the news.
SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK*
* West Shore Student Schedule Only
Monday, June 18th – Early Dismissal – Last Day of School for Students @ West Shore
Summer School Credit Recovery Program – Registration Available Tomorrow (Sat.), @ Foran, 9:00 – 12:00 noon. Now that grades have closed, you might have a need to recapture some lost credits in order to get back on track for next year. Here’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss. Summer School (Credit Recovery) is available and the last registration session will be tomorrow (Saturday), 6/16. In-person registration will take place from 9:00 – 12:00 noon; held @ Foran. In as little as 10/20 days, you can easily recapture lost credits. Click HERE for details; payment is expected at the time of registering. Good luck!
Summer Enrichment Courses Offered – Register ASAP! We mentioned our terrific summer general interest courses a few weeks ago – but are reminding you about them now, in case you lost track of these offerings. Cooking, Typing, Math, Creative Writing … and more! Click HERE for the brochure. Move fast, though, since some of these courses will be starting next week.
Summer Reading/Math ‘Packets’ – Now ONLINE. Great news! The Summer Reading and Summer Math ‘Packets’ are now ONLINE and uploaded … well … everywhere! The easiest way to find them is to go right to your school’s website homepage – and look for the Summer Reading and Summer Math icons. Click on them and you’ll be brought right to the summer work materials. Remember – the purpose of the Summer Work is not to get it all done in a mad dash and “have the rest of the summer off.” Summer work is intended to keep your child’s skills fresh – and a little practice each week, spread out over the entire summer, will help your child retain his/her skills in order to be prepared for the start of the next school year. It’s not a race – it’s a journey. Thanks! DIRECT LINK TO SUMMER WORK.
Two Reading Program Incentives for Our Kids: Of course, the talents of the Milford Public Library never fade – and this year they will continue with the Summer Reading Program. Visit the Library or go to their website for more info. They always do a fantastic job with this.
And – last but not least – the Bridgeport Sound Tigers are also joining in to reward students who continue to read all summer. Click HERE for the details on how you can earn a FREE ticket to a Sound Tigers game in October. Let’s go, Tigers (ANDReaders)!
Oyster Fest Volunteers Needed: Did you sign up yet? Volunteers are still needed for the 44th Annual Milford Oyster Festival, slated for August 17th and 18th . Especially good for students who are looking to collect some service hours. ClickHERE to get started.
Saturday, June 16: Summer School Credit Recovery Registration, held @ Foran, 9:00 – 12:00 noon. (See above for details).
Wednesday, June 20: The School of Rock Movie, @ Milford Public Library, 2:30 p.m., (suggested for kids gr. 6-12). FREE (and free snacks, too!). A great movie about a substitute teacher (Jack Black) who decides to turn his classroom students into a rock band. A funny, empowering, and wonderful film. Enjoy – and thank you Milford Public Library!
Thursday, June 21: Milford’s Make Music Day, (various locations). June 21st is the longest day of the year – and in Milford – it will be filled with music! While there will be soundings all over the city, there are two you should note, in particular. First – stop by the steps of City Hall from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – live performers (including our own Jay Rowe and Bob Nunno) will be ‘jazzing up the place.’ Later, stop by the Milford Public Library, where you can enjoy a great live performance from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Click HERE for the schedule.
Thursday, June 21: Walnut Beach Farmer’s Market, held @ the Devon Rotary Pavilion at Walnut Beach, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.; Bring in your colorful creation and receive a ‘goodie bag!’ The Farmer’s Market is BACK! Every third Thursday of the month – all summer long – enjoy the bounty of our Connecticut farmers. Kids can have some fun too – simply have them color in the Farmer’s Market Coloring Sheet – and have your child bring it to the Market. A free ‘goodie bag’ will be given to those who submit their ‘artwork!’
FRIDAY, June 22: The Annual Chair-ity Auction, @ Milford Yacht Club, 6:00 – 10:00 p.m., sponsored by the Milford Education Foundation. Tickets are limited. Register now. Since 2013, the Milford Education Foundation has supplemented the good works happening in our district by supplying funds to the Teacher Mini-Grant Program and other programs for students. The Annual Chair-ity Auction helps raise these much needed funds – and combines it with a wonderful evening of food and fun. There are 12 chairs in all up for bid – each with its own unique character and story. C’mon over and join the party! Click HERE for the flyer and ticket info.
