Reading is an important part of our day!  The more children read, the better readers they become. Our reading includes shared reading, guided reading, read alouds, and SSR (That stands for sort of silent reading in first grade)! We practice our independent reading strategies.  Before we read a new book,  we do a picture walk through the text to activate our prior knowledge. When we come to a tricky word, we look for chunks (ot, in, at, et, un, ate, ike, etc), check the pictures (Yes, they are important!), stretch the sounds, think about the story, ask ourselves if the word looks right, sounds right, and does it make sense, skip the word and go back, and touch the print. Comprehension is also an important part of reading.  We retell the story by discussing the characters, setting, problem, details, and solution.  We look at pictures, and discuss what the author/illustrator is telling us about the text. In addition to developing reading skills, it's very important that young readers love to read! So please keep in mind, the more children read, the better readers they become!
