Mr. Simler's Endangered
Animal Webquest
created by: d hourigan

Introduction
The Bearsley Park Zoo has just contacted zoologists around the world
asking for their help. They have received a large grant from the government
and will be adding exhibits to the zoo. One of the exhibits
would be a habitat for an endangered animal. However, they are not sure
which animal would be
appropriate for the zoo. They are seeking the help of zoologists in
hopes to choose the perfect animal for their zoo.
The Task
As zoologists, you and a partner will be working together to help
save an endangered animal by recommending it to the Beardsley Park Zoo
Council. It is your job to convince the Board that the animal
you have studied is the one that deserves this habitat. When
your work is done, you will present your findings to the Board.
Process
1.To understand what endangered means, click on the sites below
for background.knowledge. You will need to be able discuss what endangered
means and how to overturn the process.
2. Once you are comfortable with what endangered means, you and
your partner will choose an animal from the links below..
3. As zoologists, you will need to find information on the animal's
habitat, what it eats, their characteristics, and cause of endangerment.
You will need to think about how the zoo could build an environment
for this animal and how it will obtain the food it needs.
4. Working together, you will use Inspiration© to create
a web on which you will take notes. You will use these notes for your
news article and for your HyperStudio© Presentation. When taking
notes, remember to only write down the facts. Do not copy complete
sentences from books or sites. You will use your own thoughts to fill
in around the facts.
5. When your Inspiration Web is complete, you will write a news
article to be published in Endangered Animals Monthly. You
will present your animal and try to give ways to protect them. The
news article should be short and to the point. Make sure you spell
check and then check your grammar before submitting it for publication.
6.Next, the partners will create a HyperStudio Stack. Working
together, you will present your animal to the Board of the Beardsley
Zoo. Each member will create 3 cards about their findings. Remember
you need to convince the Board that your animal needs protection and
why.

Procedure
1. You will be assigned to
another zoologist with whom you will work. You will then choose an
animal to report on.
2. Once you have chosen your animal, you will start to gather information
using the internet sites and any books you have.
3. You will then use the program Inspiration to create a web of information
so that you can write your news article.
4. Once you have completed your Inspiration© web to your satisfaction,
each zoologist will write a news article. You will present your finding
and explain how these animals should be protected. You will include
a picture of the animal and one of the habitat.
5. Your next task will be to create a HyperStudio© stack with
your partner to present to the Board. You will create eight cards:
Introduction, Characteristics, Food, Habitat, Causes of endangerment,
Why the animal should be put into the zoo, and an Author card. You
will use this stack to give an oral talk to Board to persuade them
to bring the animal to the zoo.
6. Good luck!!!
Conclusion
Hopefully, after doing this webquest you will have
a better understanding of the animals of the world and how they relate
to their environments. You will become more aware of the forces that
are causing these animals to become endangered and learn how to protect
them.
You will also have the opportunity
to learn the programs, Inspiration© and HyperStudio©. But
most of all, we hope that you have fun.
