You will read below to understand what Impressionism means. Then you will then chose an artist to critique. You will talk about the subject matter, colors, and brushwork. You will then give your opinion of the artist's work. You can use ClarisWorks or Word to write down your information.

Impressionism

The Impressionist Art Movement was named after a painting done by Monet entitled Impression: Sunrise. He and a group of artists moved away from the traditional style of painting and created a new way to look at and paint the world. These artists preferred to paint the life that surrounded them. They painted people in their natural environments, where they worked and lived. They like to paint pictures of the countryside and city life. This was very different from the formal paintings of famous and influential people posed in a peticular setting.

The impressionists were also interested in light and how it changed throughout the day and on their subject. For example, they would pick a spot outside to paint and watch that area at sunrise, high noon, and at sunset to see how the different light affected what they saw. They were also interested in how weather affected the scene they were painting. In other words, they were painting their impression of the scene. They enjoyed painting out of doors in natural light rather than in a studio from sketches.
