Graduation with Distinction for Community Service

The Milford Board of Education recently approved a new program to recognize students who do community service.

Community service is a voluntary time (without compensation) spent on selfless acts which benefit the school, community and/or the wider community.

Not included are the following:

  • Community service for academic credit or course requirement (including CERTO, helping in the school during a free period for credit)

  • Mandated community service

  • Anything one is paid to do or which is done for a family member

  • Activities during the high school day, except long-term tutoring or long-term peer counseling or a special school-sponsored service project

Criteria:

Upon graduation, students who have completed 200 hours or more of community service in at least 3 of 4 high school years, with at least 40 hours in each of the 3 years over grades 9 -12, will be awarded a Diploma with Distinction for Community Service.

The guidelines are as follows:

  • Service may begin when a student enters high school and may include summer service after 9th, 10th, and/or 11th grade.

  • Students should turn in proof of service as each project is completed and no later than May 1 each year.

  • Documentation for service for May through August must be turned in no later than October 15th during the following year. This will be extended to January 31st just for this year.

  • Students must turn in a form for each project signed by (and with the phone number of) the adult responsible at the site of the project.

  • Transfer students must have been in attendance in a Milford high school for at least 4 semesters. To meet Milford 3 year requirement, a transfer student may provide verifiable documentation of prior community service that meets Milford criteria.

Please note: The Community Service Recognition Program with Mrs. Morlath is still in effect for juniors and seniors as they are not eligible for Graduation with Distinction. This program will be phased out in two years. Juniors and seniors may still submit Community Service Recognition slips to Mrs. Morlath. These students will be recognized at the end of the year. Please see Mrs. Morlath if you have any questions about either program. Forms will be available in the Guidance Office.
