CLUBS
SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS:
Key Club
http://www.milforded.org/schools/jlaw/keyclubs/
The Key Club is a service organization for both the school and the community.
Any student grades 9-12 may join. Members volunteer for various activities
and assist other groups in Milford (the Salvation Army, the Red Cross
and the Milford Youth and Police Youth Program, St. Mary's carnival, Milford
art fairs on the green). See Mr. Boynton for more information.
Keyettes
Like its Key Club counterpart, Keyettes is a service club, open to all
grades. Included on their list of activities is a Blood Drive and babysitting
at PTA meetings. See Mrs. Jaekle for more information.
Natural Helpers
Law's Natural Helpers, many of whom started in their role as peer mediators
in Middle School, continue in that role at Jonathan Law. Members help
with Freshmen Orientation, sponsor the Student-Faculty Basketball Game,
participate in the Relay for Life and work with the Anti-Defamation League,
and take part in many other community oriented activities throughout the
year. See Mr. Zuraw for more information.
ACTIVITIES/CLUBS:
Anime Club
Members study Japanese culture, exchange Anime books and have film nights
where they watch Anime movies. See Ms. Mannion for more information.
Best Buddies
The vision behind the Best Buddies high school program is to maximize
social opportunities for high school students in the mainstream and special
education classes by matching them in one-to-one friendships. The goal
is to establish foundations for genuine friendships, thus enriching the
lives of both participants. See Mrs. McNulty for more information.
Book Club
The Book Club is a gathering of students and staff who meet once a month
to discuss the "Book of the Month." Books range from romances,
to mysteries, to science fiction, to thrillers. We meet in the Media Center
and exchange ideas and talk about what we liked or didn't like about that
month's selection, all while sharing cookies, milk, and brownies. Anyone,
student or staff, who is interested or has read that month's book, is
welcome to attend. The Media Center provides copies of the book to those
people who do not have one of their own. See Mrs. Scire for more information.
Close Up Club
Close Up Washington is a week-long political experience for grade 10,
11 and 12th grade students. The program gives participants a "close
up" look at the workings of the Federal government. See Mr. Miller
for more information.
Diversity Club
The Diversity Club's goal is to educate and encourage the celebration
of our differences. Club members hosted a "Day of Silence",
met for group discussions and enjoyed ethnic meals together. See Ms. Raymo
for more information.
Drama Club
The Drama Club is an organization open to all students. There are generally
two productions a year. If a student is not interested in performing,
he or she can become a member of the stage crew, do lighting or other
technical-type work. The students who join Drama Club work hard, but also
have a lot of fun! Last year's production of "Arsenic and Old Lace"
was a big hit. See Ms. Raymo for more information.
GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance)
A club dedicated to assuring that every member of our school community
is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
See Mrs. Toomey for more information.
Math Club
The Math Club has two primary activities: To provide academic peer assistance
from upper level math students at the high school and to visit a local
elementary school where they pair one-on-one math support for students
there. See Mr. Ragaini for more information.
Poetry Jam
Started four years ago, the Poetry Jam has grown into one of Law's most
original clubs. Members meet weekly to share and workshop their poetry
and to organize the Jam -- a school-wide competition of the spoken word.
In past years the Club has hosted renowned poets for a performance and
workshop.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT:
Each class elects officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer
and Senator). Elections are usually held in the spring of each year with
freshmen elections in the fall. Class officers are automatically members
of the Student Council, but students may also join Student Council without
being an officer. The Student Government sponsors a Talent Show and a
dance in addition to acting as student-administration liaisons. See Mr.
Kramer for more information.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:
The Advocate
The school newspaper, The Advocate, is produced seven times per year (24-28
pages per issue) by students in Journalism I and II. Students work and
learn in a classroom/newsroom environment, writing articles, laying out
pages and completing units on ethics, news writing, editorial writing,
feature writing, media impact, photojournalism and more. Outstanding performance
in journalism is rewarded with induction into Quill & Scroll, the
national journalism society. See Mr. Kulenych for more information.
Blink
Blink, the literary magazine at Jonathan Law, is published annually by
students in Journalism II. Blink features original artwork, poetry, short
stories and photography submitted by Law students and faculty. The 45-50
page magazine is published in the spring. See Mr. Kulenych for more information.
National Honor Society (NHS)
Members are selected for their scholarship, leadership, character and
service. NHS members organize service projects throughout the year in
school and in the community including the Giving Tree and Read Across
America Day. See Ms. Bouchard for more information.
