Interactively Learning the Parts of Speech
Teacher's Guide

Subject:  Language Arts--Grade 7

Objectives:

 Students will become familiar with the different parts of speech
 Students will be able to define the different parts of speech
 Students will recognize the different parts of speech
 Students will be able to implement  the different parts of speech in their writing

Materials:  Computer with Internet Connection
  Word Processor
  Inspiration Program

Procedures:

 1.  Students will be given handouts listing the parts of speech and their definitions.
 2.  Students will learn the parts of speech by answering the following essential questions:

  How many parts of speech are there?
  What are the parts of speech?
  What are the definitions for the parts of speech?
  Do the parts of speech help you in your writing?
  How do the parts of speech help improve your writing skills?
 3.  Students will go into the Harborside Site--

     Play  the games Concentration, Flash Cards, and Matching Squares
     Continue to practice unitl you feel that you know all the parts of speech and their
     definitions

     Go back to Students/Classes and scroll down to Mrs. Ware--
     Grammar Quizzes
     Go to index and click onto each part of speech,
     Read about each part of speech and finally take the quizzes
 4.  After much practice with the names of the parts of speech and their definitions, students will now create a graphic
      organizer on the different parts of speech using the Inspiration Program.

      Students need to use pictures and words in their organizer to explain the parts of speech.

 5.  As a final activity, students will write a five or six sentence story about their class.  They will highlight in different
      colors the eight parts of speech.  Next, they will pair up with a student to read their stories and check to make sure
      that the proper parts of speech have been used in the correct places.  In addition, after sharing their story with the
      class, they will recopy their stories and omit words so that other students may alter their stories with different parts
      of speech.

Follow Up Activities:

 Copies of student paragraphs will be shared with other classes to check for correct parts of speech.
