While students are reading the book they will do the following activities for each chapter:
l. Give the Chapter a Title (main idea)
2. Develop two questions using the QAR's (question, answer, and response)
Right Their Questions, Think and Search, Author and You, and On Your Own
3. Also, students will use CMT's questioning stems in the areas of initial understanding, developing interpretation, and developing a critical stance. For instance, words such as IDENTIFY.., EXPLAIN.., DESCRIBE.., COMPARE..,CONTRAST.., CRITICIZE.., IDENTIFY.., LIST.., RELATE.., SHOW.., MOST LIKELY.., OPINION.., can be used to make up questions.
4. Students will give a short summary of each chapter.
5. Students will make a prediction about the next chapter based on what they have previously read.
Another component of the during activities is that students will work in small groups of 3 to 4 students sharing their work on each chapter. Each student asks their questions in small groups while their partners try to answer them. Afterwards, the class comes together as a whole and students share their titles, questions, summaries, and predictions.
