For after reading activities, students can go into the before reading activities and do several of the internet research projects mentioned.
In addition, besides a standard final test which may include matching, a cloze activity, multiple choice, and statements to be supported by evidence from the story, an additional writing activity was created. The writing activity is a RAFT--Role, Audience, Format, and Task.

A Letter |
Task:
You have just received an
invitation to return to the Ozarks for a family reunion.
Write a letter to your sisters accepting the invitation.
In your letter explain how you feel about returning and why is
it so important for you to return. As you write your letter
tell about the memories that have come back to you as you
think about your childhood. Use evidence from the story
to back your response.
Students will be responsible to complete a graphic organizer provided by the teacher before they do their actual writing.
The teacher may use a rubric to assess the student's work. The rubric may contain criteria such as completed organizer, good introduction, specific examples and details supporting the writer's reasons, proper format, good tone to the letter, fluency, evidence of transition words, strong conclusion which echoes the introduction, neatness, and mechanics such as grammar and spelling.
