A Beardsley Zoo Excursion!

Mrs. Jennifer Zammiello, Grade 6

Here's YOUR TASK!

We're going to visit the zoo online and research the body lengths of some animals that live there. Then, we're going to record our data on an Excel Spreadsheet and make some graphs to illustrate our data.  Finally, you will create some questions that your classmates can answer when they read your graphs.  Let's get started!
Save this document to your school folder under the name “zoo”

The spreadsheet is set up so that you can enter your research data into the

appropriate cells.  You must Double click on the sheet to open it so that you may

type into it.  Double click on a cell now and see if it works.

1. Enter your Data

Go to the following websites in order, look for the information you need, and then enter it above.

We will do a formula for the mean body lenght later, so focus on the start and end of range points.

For example, if an animal is from 4.5 to 6 inches long, 4.5 is the start of range, and 6 is the end of range.

We will use those numbers to calculate the mean length later.

You may want to have scrap paper handy- it may be helpful as you move between sites.

2.  Now that you've collected your data…

Let's figure out the mean body length of each animal.

Double click on the spreadsheet to open it for use.

For mammals, click on B4.

Type in the formula bar:  = (C4+D4)/2

Press Enter

This will calculate the mean length of a Siberian Tiger

Fill down the formula from B4-B6.

Next, do the same for Amphibians, starting in B10.

Then, do the same for Reptiles, starting in B16.

3.  Graph your Data…

You will make 3 bar graphs, one for each class of animals.

Cut and Paste your Amphibian graph onto a word document so you can type questions below it.

Finally, do the reptile graph applying the steps you learned above.

4.  What questions do your graphs answer?

Copy your graph onto a new Word document and type 5 questions below each graph.

If someone reads your graph, they should be able to answer your questions with it.

We will later print each graph and questions, and I will make copies for the class.
