There were billions of numbers that were used to build and sail the Titanic. You will begin a search to locate some of these numbers using Internet sites that I have selected for you. You will also search the library as an additional source.

Once you have a selection of numbers, we will use these numbers to write word problems for ratio, percent and proportion.

Activity 2

Research the following Titanic sites for numbers to make your own ratio and proportion problems:

 

Manifest Dimensions Passenger list

• Use the following as an example:

        1.     There were 1,500 passengers on the Titanic.
                Of these passengers, there were 500 first
                class passengers.

                What is the ratio of total passengers to first
                class passengers?

                Solution: 1,500   =  15  =  3
                                500         5       1

                Written as a ratio it would read:  1:3 passengers would be first class.
 

• Write out a list of 20 numbers that you will use to make up your problems.

• Prepare a list of your Internet sources and all other sources used.

• Share your problems with the class and one interesting fact that you learned while researching the Titanic web sites.
