Short Story Assignment
FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY:Use these books:By June 9th you will have read 8 short stories and written 8 hypertext reviews that discuss the use of modernistic elements contained in them.
- The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories by Ernest Hemingway
- Stories by Katherine Mansfield
- Modern British Short Stories, edited by Malcolm Bradbury
and this list of online texts:
- Araby by JAMES JOYCE
- Hills Like White Elephants by ERNEST HEMINGWAY
Eyes of a Blue Dog by GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ- A Haunted House by VIRGINIA WOOLF
- The Mark on the Wall by VIRGINIA WOOLF
- Kew Gardens by VIRGINIA WOOLF
- An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by AMBROSE BIERCE
- Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H. LAWRENCE
- On the Gulls Road by WILLA CATHER
- There are 2 parts to the online, hypertext review:
a. a short summary of the story. Put this in a paragraph that you call SUMMARY.
b. a critical response essay. Be sure to have links in the essay (that's what makes it hypertext).
- Comment on theme, style, characterization, etc.
- At least two essays must be published online by each Friday.
- Do not read more than 3 stories from the same book.
- In order to do "A" work on the essays, you will need to focus on elements of modernism that you learned from the art lessons and apply them to the short story response essays.
- You must use references to other literary analysis you find to help you support comments made in the response essays. Look for critical reviews that focus on the title, the author or on modern literature.
- I suggest that a typical strategy for each short story would be to:
- read the story.
- discuss the story with fellow classmates by going here: Wired Discussion of Modern Short Stories.
- read a critical analysis of the work/author/genre/time period from Internet research.
- incorporate supporting details from the critical analysis into your final draft.
I will be discussing certain matters relating to Modernism in class and we will be speaking constantly about your progress on these short stories and on the work. On Mondays, students reading the same stories will get together to discuss them as well as write forum entries with Hinckley HS to discuss the stories on the Internet.
