Self evaluating your first draft: An Essay Checklist

After you have printed a copy of your essay, fill out this checklist and submit both to Mr. Turtola by the end of today's class.

TITLE: Have I answered the question adequately?

INTRODUCTION:

The introduction should address the topic and indicate a direction of the argument.

It should NOT include first person references or speak about the process of how the paper was written. Use a pen and remove any references to words like "I","me", "my", or "mine" .

CONCLUSION:

The conclusion draws together the stages of the argument and provides a convincing answer to the essay question.

Write a 3-4 sentence paragraph that does this and add it at the end of your essay.


STRUCTURE: Is there a clear, logical structure?

PARAGRAPHS:

Does each paragraph cover only one main issue and is there a coherent connection between paragraphs?

PUNCTUATION: Is it accurate? (If unsure, try reading work aloud to check for pauses, indicating
the need for commas etc.)

Using a pen, correct at least 5 errors you found in your paper.

STYLE: Is it formal and academic? – no slang expressions, no short forms such as “don’t” or “it’s”, no sweeping statements, no emotive words etc.

Using a pen, correct any slang or non-academic language you found.

SPELLING and GRAMMAR: Are they accurate? (Have I made thoughtful use of the Spelling and the Grammar check facilities in “Word” (under Tools)?

QUOTATIONS: Are there quotations in the essay? Are the quotations presented consistently and accurately? You must use quotations when recording words verbatim from a source.

Write the number of quotes you have in the essay here:

REFERENCES: Are the references complete and presented consistently and accurately?
You must provide a list of resources in a Works Cited Page.

PLAGIARISM: Have I provided adequate references to material consulted for the essay in order to avoid plagiarism?
