INTRODUCTION

¡Qué explosión latina en los Estados Unidos!  While most of America was asleep, Latinos became the nation’s largest minority group, 35.3 million according to the 2000 census bureau.  12.5 % of the U.S. population, which means approximately one out of every 8 people in the United States is Latino.  We've come a long way, chicos. Look what we have done for history, music, sports, art, television, motion pictures, etc.  There’s no stopping us!  The future’s here, and Latinos are standing up and being recognized.

So . . . the television station that you work for, whose ratings are low wants to air a live broadcast, in hopes of boosting their ratings.  Your job as host depends on obtaining famous Hispanic people from the past and/or present to join you in an effort to help the American people discover and understand more about the lives and works of these important role models. ¡ Buena Suerte!

TASK

Your task will be two fold, meaning an individual task and a group task. Each group should consist of three to five members. Each member of your group will chose a role, either to be the talk show host(s), the celebrity(ies), or the marketing manager.  The individual task that you accomplish is as such.  Hosts will research one or two Hispanic individuals (depending on the size of the group) and create a PowerPoint presentation for each individual.  Each guest will research one Hispanic individual and create one Power Point presentation. The marketing manager will create a brochure regarding the program using Microsoft Publisher.  Each group will present their information using a T.V. talk show format.  Click here to see some highlights of past presentations.

After selecting your role, each person will gather data and other interesting facts about the guest(s).  After gathering the above, the host(s) and the celebrity(ies) will make their own PowerPoint presentation in Spanish, the Marketing Manager will be working on Microsoft Publisher in Spanish, and the entire group will come together to write and practice the live question and answer segment of the
T.V. talk show.

Remember ratings are low; your jobs are on the line so it is important to impress the American public in order to boost ratings.  It is therefore essential for each celebrity(ies) and host(s) to dress up and wear costumes as you role-play the talk show host(s) and celebrity figure(s).  Wear beards, mustaches, wigs, earrings, berets, and capes, carry a microphone and play soft background music.  Chicas, don’t be afraid to wear beards, mustaches, beards, etc., while taking a role of a man.  Same goes to all my chicos when taking a role of a woman. Have fun; this is a live TV show presentation. Use your imagination and be creative. Your station managers are watching you!

ROLES:

HOST (S): The live talk show will begin with an introduction of his/her guest(s) and will focus on biographical information such as when he/she was born, where he/she was born, and his/her professional work and some important facts about his/her life and accomplishments.  This PowerPoint slide introduction should consist of at least 6- 7 slides, including a citation page.  The host will then introduce his/her guest onto the stage, (the center of our classroom) while the audience, all you remaining students, applaud enthusiastically.  At this time a live face-to-face Spanish interview will be conducted based on five questions you found from researching.  Work on this part together with your celebrity(ies) so that when it is show time, all will be prepared.  Remember this is a live show, the use of note cards will not be allowed.

WE MUST BREAK FOR A COMMERCIAL AFTER THE INTERVIEW IS CONDUCTED!

CELEBRITY 1: This is when your Power Point presentation of 10-15 slides, which includes a citation page, will be introduced.  The commercial will be you promoting your painting(s), movie(s), song(s), CD(s), book(s), voyage(s), game(s), etc.  Use your imagination and other resources.

When we come back from the commercial break, this is when the host(s) will introduce his/her next guest using another PowerPoint slide presentation of 5-6 slides.

CELEBRITY 2: will enter onto the stage and will greet Celebrity 1 and the host(s).  Again a live Spanish interview will be conducted.  Remember this live interview has already been prepared and rehearsed by the two of you previously in the “back room” (Media Center, classroom, and outside of class), so that the T. V. viewing audience does not laugh at the guest and you.

OH NO.. . Another commercial announcement!

CELEBRITY 2 will now conduct his/her PowerPoint slide presentation of 10-15 slides.  (citation page included) promoting his/her painting(s), movie(s), song(s), CD(s), book(s), voyage(s), game(s), etc.  Again use your creativity, intellect, and other resources.

MARKETING MANAGER:  You are in charge of developing El Programa de Hoy using Microsoft Publisher.  This brochure will contain a cover with the title En Vivo de__ con __ - Live from __ with __.  Inside will be pictures and information regarding the guests that will appear on that show.  You also must include a citation page.  Remember your job depends on the show’s ratings so you need to promote this live broadcast.  In addition you will introduce the host at the beginning of the show, operate the host(s) and celebrity(ies) Power Point presentations and assist the host at the end of the show with the question and answer segment.  You will have to repeat each audience member’s question to the celebrity(ies) and host(s).

Before the show ends the host(s) will take questions from the audience members for each celebrity and for the host.  OF COURSE the audience participants will receive a special prize selected especially for them:  PUNTOS EXTRAS.  Questions will need to be asked and answered IN SPANISH, so we must listen carefully to the marketing manager when he repeats each question before the celebrity (ies) or host(s) responds.

OH NO …. The station managers are playing the music, the final clips are rolling, the show is concluding. The host(s) now needs to thank his/her guest(s) and audience and announce who will appear on tomorrow’s show. The marketing manager at this time will pass out to each audience member El Programa de Hoy to keep as a souvenir. (Study notes for future quiz and/test)
