Introduction:

The city of Milford wants to attract a minor league baseball team. Since there are already two teams close by, one in Bridgeport (BLUEFISH) and one in New Haven (RAVENS), the mayor has appointed you and your WEBQUEST team to create a presentation that will convince either the BLUEFISH or the RAVENS affiliates that our city is a better location/choice for their team.

The Quest:

Your assignment is to gather all the pertinent information you can that will clearly favor the city of Milford. Your WEBQUEST team should consist of five members. Each member will have a particular task or you can work with a partner. Be sure all the information that you use can be verified, if necessary. The results of your findings should also show that when compared to where each team is playing, now, our city is better! Please be sure to be positive in your presentation and do not use negative arguments against either Bridgeport or New Haven.

The Roles:

Begin by choosing a role.

Role 1: Stadium location - You will search for information concerning the environmental impact on the most suitable sites. Be able to recommend the site that would be most favorable.

Role 2: Traffic & accessibility - You will search for information concerning the mapping of best routes and alternates for visitors to and from highways coming from out of town as well as for local traffic.

Role 3: Team name/logo/mascot - You will search for information concerning a suitable team which has meaning and significance to the city and its people. Design a logo and a mascot that is both fitting to baseball and attractive with regard to colors, shapes, and lettering.

Role 4: Sponsors and advertisements - You will search for information concerning what to say to potential clients who want to spend their advertising dollars. These clients may want you to write their ad and to see how it will be displayed. This may be a BIG selling point in convincing a minor league team to move here...more revenue!!!!!

Role 5: Ticket sales and promotions You will search out information concerning how to go about getting fans to purchase seats in advance through subscribing to various packages (number of games) or be a season ticket holder. You will need to find out about "marketing" the game for those who are not yet fans by offering skill contests, lucky prizes, giveaway merchandise and fan friendly service.

The Process:

Now search out the information concerning your role. Record your findings in writing or on your computer word processor and SAVE. Store important written and/or printed information by how it can be best used to connect your role with the MAIN IDEA of the presentation. You might identify information to be presented orally and information to be presented visually with different labels.

At predetermined times all members need to meet as a team to analyze information through sharing and discussing. The information you (THE TEAM) agree upon should remain as part of the MAIN presentation. Other information that is not agreed upon through consensus should not be used. A test for this kind of information may be to brainstorm a set of questions and prepare a checklist that consists of answers that should tie into the MAIN Presentation/TASK.

Evaluation:

You will be given a performance based assessment. It will consist of a rubric system of points for each role (INDIVIDUAL GRADE) and a total number of points (GROUP GRADE). Each person in the group will participate in that part of the PRESENTATION in which he/she has had a role. Organize your material, making sure to have a beginning, middle and end that keeps to the point. Finally, I would like to VIDEO TAPE your group's PRESENTATION as a learning experience (FEEDBACK) and, if necessary, for re-assessment.

Conclusion:

Now that you have accomplished your task and convinces a minor league baseball team affiliate to play here, take the time to visit another city's team and watch the game! Maybe because of what you have learned you'll be able to SEE much more!!
