WEB QUEST

INTRODUCTION

Issues concerning the environment encompass a number of different view points. As these viewpoints are expressed, a specific proposal concerning the environment suddenly becomes extremely complex and at the same time, very sensitive.

An example of a current issue demonstrating this type of phenomena is President Bush's proposal to drill for oil in Alaska, where the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge lies. Due to the number of different players involved, this has become a national debate of great importance.

TASK

President Bush has proposed that we drill for oil in our own territory in order to supply the U.S. with a certain percentage of oil. Immediately following Bush's proposal, many controversial debates began to arise. Reason for these debates lies in the values of the stakeholders, or people who are involved with the decision. The values of the different players in this environmental issue differ tremendously depending on how they are being effected.

You will be taking on a specific role that either supports or opposes Bush's proposal to drill the Alaska. Then you will prepare a powerpoint presentation on why we should or shouldn't drill in Alaska for oil depending on the values of the role you are playing. At the end of this lesson you will take part in the following activities: 1) Prepare and present a powerpoint presentation demonstrating your role's opinion on drilling, 2) take part in a class debate on the issue at hand, 3) write a reflection after the class debate to voice your own opinion of the issue at hand.

You will have access to material resources, on hard copy, as well as on-line link to prepare your report.

PROCESS

You should have been assigned to a specific role that you will be playing before you started the web quest.

Review each of the roles below so that you are sure of all different players involved with this issue.

  • What kind of monetary improvements, if any, will be made with the drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?
  • How will the oil be distributed?
  • What kind of effects will drilling have on the environment?
  • How will this effect the import of oil from different countries?
  • How will this effect surrounding countries?
  • What type of political benefits/disadvantages will be a result of drilling?
  • Will this create or hinder jobs in Alaska?
  • How will this effect the price of gasoline in the United States?
  • What actions can be taken to stop the drilling?
  • How will drilling effect the Alaskan ecosystem?

Use the links provided below to perform your research, however do not limit yourself to these links and feel free to conduct our own search as well.

When you are completed with your research, you may begin designing your powerpoint presentation. Follow the guidelines below to prepare: Your powerpoint presentation must include a minimum of 5 Slides. Extra Credit will be given for a more developed presentation with more than 5 slides.

CONCLUSION
Re-state topic, opinion, and sub-topics

You will use this powerpoint presentation to assist you in presenting your role and point of view to the rest of the class. EVERYONE must do their own presentation. It needs only to be a 3-5 minute presentation. Refer to the Evaluation Section for a Rubric on your powerpoint and presentation.

When presentations are complete, you wil meet with your fellow supporters or opposers before the debate. During this time you must pick the five most COMPELLING reasons out of your whole group whether or not we should drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Each group will have 20 minutes to meet before the debate begins. Everyone must speak at least once during the debate. It would also be a good idea to brainstorm some issues that the opposing group might point out, and form some potential rebuttal statements for those issue that may arise. Refer to the Evalutaion Section of the Web Quest to review the expectations of your performance during the debate.

When we are completed with the debate, you should follow the guide questions below to write your reflection:

  • What were some of the similarities and differences between the opposing views during the debate?
  • What kind of things affect the way people think differently about an issue?
  • How do we determine who is right and who is wrong?
  • How might it be difficult to find a common ground between two opposing views?
  • Why is it important for all point of views be voiced when a situation comes up like this?
  • In your opinion, should we drill or not? Explain your answer giving valid reasons to back up your thoughts.

CONCLUSION

As you have found through this web quest, environmental issues that are controversial give rise to many different view points and valid debates. There are no right or wrong answers as to whether or not drilling should take place in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. However, the stakeholders of the particular issue have certain values that eventually formulate opinions. When an environmental issue relating to you arises and you feel strongly about it, make sure to voice your opinion. EVERYONE's voice should be heard to have a better understanding of the ENTIRE issue.
