The HSMS Media Center offers several online databases to provide student access to magazines, newspapers and encyclopedias on the web. We are pleased to let you know that all of these databases may be accessed from school and home.

Search for information on international news and events.
Connect to a variety of links, including newspapers (such as The Hartford Courant and The New York Times), plus magazines and journals. Click on "Access Databases from home." Enter your public library card number.
As of July 1, 2013, iCONN provides access to the EbscoHost Middle Online database. Use this database to find over 25,000 entries in the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, full text articles in over 145 magazines, plus newspaper articles. HealthSource also provides full-text articles for nearly 190 journals, and several professional collections may be searched as well. Ebsco also has a corresponding Kids Search Database. To find these resources, once you get to the iCONN home page, click Middle School under Search Individual Resources on the left.
Contains links to the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, which is a valuable resource “containing thousands of new and expanded articles, extensive hyperlinks, bibliographies and links to other sources of information on the web.” It is updated monthly. Links are also provided for The New Book of Knowledge Online and Encyclopedia Americana.
Discovery Education offers free student resources that “bring learning to life both inside and outside the classroom.” Students can take a look at the “interactive games, videos, contests, virtual labs and activities” that are designed to help students “dive deeper” into a topic.
Founded in 1999, BrainPOP creates animated, curricular content t hat engages students, supports educators, and bolsters achievement. Great resource!
