About the Teacher
Jessica Turner Shearer holds a B.S. and M.A. in music education with an emphasis in conducting and performance from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH and the Cleveland Institute of Music. She completed additional graduate work at the Eastman School of Music during the summer of 2001 as a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Fellowship as well as at the Berklee College of Music. Currently, Mrs. Shearer is completing her intermediate administrators certificate at Sacred Heart University with an anticipate completion in the fall of 2012. Mrs. Shearer earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescence/Young Adult Music in 2003. She is the only music teacher in CT who holds that certification.
Mrs. Shearer has taught all levels of instrumental music from elementary through high school. From 1992 - 2003 she worked with the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony as an associate conductor. With the CYWS, she conducted and performed on five international tours. An active private clarinet instructor, Mrs. Shearer has had students who have gone on to attend the Eastman School of Music, The University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, The University of Maryland, and Case Western Reserve University. She is an active member of NAfME and the Connecticut Music Educators Association (CMEA) having served as the CMEA News Editor from 2004-2009 and as the Southern Region High School Band Chair in 2011 and 2012. In addition she has presented at CMEA (CT) and OMEA (Ohio) state conferences and for the Milford Public Schools. Mrs. Shearer has been with the Milford Public Schools Music Department since the fall of 2004.
As Director of Music at Joseph A. Foran High School, Mrs. Shearer's teaching responsibilities include the Concert, Jazz, and Marching Bands as well as courses in Jazz Improvisation, Music Theory, Music Technology, iPads & Music, the History of Rock & Roll, Piano and Guitar. She serves as co-advisor to the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Drama Club. Additionally, Mrs. Shearer serves as a TEAM mentor and is the department head for music, visual art, physical education, and health at Foran High School.
