Homework

Homework Policy and Expectations

This year we will be using a Readling Log to track students progress and homework/time spent reading at home.  Some find electronic to be easier, others like a piece of paper for convenience. Both will be available, more to come.

I do not want homework to consume all of your family time as this time is important to all of us. PLEASE contact me if there are homework issues at home.  I ask that you don't help your student too much because it changes my understanding of their comprehension.  In other words, I need to see what they can do alone. The old rule of thumb being 10 minutes per grade (4th grade = 40 minutes) is no longer the norm.  As expectations increase, so does the amount of effort required by all of us.  Your students will be supported based on their needs and my expectations will be based on your student's ability. All I ask is that they persevere and do their best. In my world, effort equals success.  Most nights your student will have ELA, Math and are expected to read for 20 minutes or more.  Reading every night is very important AND provides parents an opportunity to read with their student. Your student will be assessed on their ability to read aloud.  I recommend they read to you at least twice a week.  This is also an opportunity for students to read text above their level...they have an adult to ask questions, probe for understanding, explain vocabulary...The most valuable time a student has is face to face with a teacher (AKA you and me).

Email question and concerns, I'll get right back to you.  This page will not be updated weekly as of now.  We will be using an assignment pad filled out by the students daily.  I ask that you sign it each night as a means of home-school communication.
