This American Tribal Fusion Style class is lively and largely improvisational, using simple steps and gestures taken from an array of cultures. African, Spanish Flamenco, Turkish, Egyptian, Hindi and Gypsy-style movements are incorporated into an elegant and graceful celebration of the strength and beauty of the female form, regardless of age or size. Bring a 3-yard scarf (or piece of chiffon or silk fabric) for veil work. All levels. Six weeks.

Nancy Hammett
, owner of Sound Mind & Body, LLC of Milford, studied classical ballet, jazz and multi-cultural dance at Gus Giordano Studios of Chicago and the New York Academy of Ballet. She was a member of the women’s gymnastics team at Southern Illinois University and danced professionally throughout Europe and the U.S. She is an I.D.E.A. member, A.C.E. certified Personal Trainer, Nia instructor and Kripalu Certified Vinyasa Yoga teacher. She also trained in Isshinryu Karate and obtained the rank of Seventh Kyu.

G081 Birding for Beginners
NEW. This course takes place at the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point, one of the top bird-watching sites in the state. We’ll cover the basics of bird watching with a focus on field identification skills, along with bird behavior, digital photography, and how to attract birds to your yard. Classroom sessions will utilize the Center’s state-of-the-art video and computer, and will be followed by a Saturday morning in the field where you will put all your new skills into practice. Limit: 10 students. Four weeks.

This beginners course will teach you the basics of how to play and enjoy the game of kings. If you’ve never touched a piece, or if you do know when you can castle, you’ll learn the fundamentals of the three stages of a chess game and how to decide which moves are to your advantage. Studies have shown it is never too late to strengthen our muscles and improve our cardiovascular system. Active seniors (55+) can maintain their lifestyles and remain independent longer if they build stamina and strength. Using Nautilus-type equipment, stability balls and free weights, this program will give participants an opportunity to strengthen arms, shoulders, backs, legs, chest and abdominals. These exercises help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce arthritis pain, and help prevent diabetes. Limit: 13 students. Class begins February 4. Eight weeks.

In this informative class, Max will instruct you on the secrets of fly fishing, including hands on fly casting and fly tying. He will also cover proper clothing. Now is your chance to try it out before you buy any equipment. The instructor will provide rods and fly tying materials for use in the class. G099 Saltwater Fly Fishing
NEW. This course will teach you all you need to know to successfully fly fish in salt water. We will start with an examination of equipment, knots and leaders. Then study the prey species, the flies that best imitate them and how to tie them. We end with a slide presentation of a number of habitats and fishing spots along the Connecticut Shoreline. Students will be notified as to equipment and material they will need before the first class. Seven weeks.

This ancient form of resistance training is pleasant, meditative and effective. Class begins with a cardiovascular warm-up to the beat of world music. Core strengthening Pilates postures follow.
